Saul Bass
Artist Booklet
Create a small booklet that introduces an inspiring artist. It will feature their life story, artwork, and what makes them unique. The booklet aims to be visually appealing and informative, making it easy for readers to learn about the artist and their work.
How it started
The concept of this project was to design a booklet to share information on an artist of my choice. I chose Saul Bass, who is most known for designing logos, movie posters and title sequences. I was influenced by his work and combined some together to create a design that could showcase his work and give some history about him as well. His use of jagged edges and bright bold colors is what first drew me to him, and then I had found out that he was the man behind some logos that have been around for years, such as the Girls Scouts of America.
Colors
Bass’ use of color was bright, bold and catches the viewer’s attention. He would mostly use single colors along with black to create a straightforward visual element that would complement the story being told. I decided to take the same approach and use black to emphasize the other colors and guide the viewer through the information.
Typography
While searching for a font to use for my headings I found a font that was created to resemble the hand drawn text that Bass would create for movie posters. The font is more of a display font and a way to honor his style even more for the booklet. The subheading font is more uniform and precise as opposed to the heading typeface.
Digital Designs
My digital design came out exactly how I had envisioned it to look. I was happy with the way that everything had come out and although it was a basic design, I think that it encapsulates Saul Bass’ most notable works into a nice design to showcase him as an artist and everything he was able to accomplish in his life. I like the way that some of the black bold lines appear to lead the viewer to the next page and make them want to read more about this great artist.
Final Design
I had the final booklet printed out at the local printer and was able to assemble the booklet using a saddle stitch to bind it. This was my first time binding a book using this method, however I found it quite easy, and it seemed to hold this type of work together well. I think that the colors may have printed a little darker than I had hoped but overall, I like the way that it turned out.
