Calgary Winter Olympic Branding
This project results in a branding and communication plan for the Winter Olympic Games. It includes visuals aimed at connecting with audiences worldwide, enhancing the event's identity across different platforms.
How it started
To start this project, I first chose the city as the host city of the Winter Olympics. Calgary seemed like the perfect location, so I started looking at the different types of architecture and landmarks that were unique to the city. During research I found the interesting Peace Bridge that ended up being the inspiration for my final logo design.
Colors
A first I chose red because I felt that Canada was known for their symbolic red maple leaf. I added blue to contrast the red and to match the cool colors of winter. The green represents the evergreen trees and the beautiful, lush landscape that Calgary has to offer. The shades of blue and green were inspired by the Alberta flag, which Calgary is part of.
Typography
Since the logo design felt modern, I decided to use a sans serif typeface. Both fonts felt modern and had a similar look overall but felt like a perfect fit for this project. Calgary has a rich history and is proud of its past, but with this design I wanted to focus on the future with a more modern take that would be easy for to read and understand.
First Digital Iterations
My digital designs started out all red, I tried different typefaces and tried to incorporate Calgary’s rodeo background into one design. The third design is when I decided to add some color rather than only being solid red and found the fonts that I wanted to utilize for the final design. These designs felt overwhelming and too bold overall in my opinion.
Final Design
For the final design, I focused solely on the center of my logo design and removed unnecessary shapes. By removing the outer shapes it made the logo become less overwhelming and more striking and eye catching. I think the design that it created is unique and memorable while utilizing the colors to balance the overall design and create a cohesive logo.
